Iraq turns to Regragui as Arnold talks stall ahead of World Cup 2026
With Graham Arnold’s contract ending on July 31 2026, the Iraq Football Association is rushing to weigh its options. Iraq lost its last five matches, most recently 0-5 to Senegal on June 26 2026, so the pressure is on to pick a coach fast. Moroccan tactician Walid Regragui is now the frontrunner after talks to extend Arnold broke down.
Why Regragui tops the shortlist right now
According to Iraqi sports channel Al-Rabea, Regragui is the board’s preferred pick. He steered Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and lifted the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. His deep experience with Arab teams gives him an edge in handling Iraq’s squad after five straight defeats.
Arnold talks first, Regragui second
No official move toward Regragui has been made yet. The IFA’s first task is to settle Arnold’s future; he guided Iraq to qualify for the 2026 World Cup since May 2025. A special committee led by Younis Mahmoud-with Sarmad Abdulilah and Mohammed Nasser as deputies-must rule before July 31.
Regragui available but no talks opened
Regragui became free in March 2026 after his Morocco contract expired. Despite the media buzz, the IFA has not opened formal talks with him. Iraq will wait for Arnold’s outcome before deciding on Regragui, but the clock is ticking.
