Following the success of Moroccan coach Waleed Rukraki in leading the Moroccan national team to unprecedented achievements, including reaching the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup and securing fourth place, there were speculations about his potential appointment as the new head coach for Iraq’s national team. This was intended to replace Graham Arnold, who has recently signed an extended contract with the Iraqi Football Association (FA) until February 2027.
However, according to reports from Moroccan radio station 'March Radio', there are no formal negotiations between the Iraqi FA and Waleed Rukraki regarding his possible appointment. The coach was considered as a secondary option in case of failed negotiations for renewing Graham Arnold's contract. However, the union reached an agreement with Arnold that includes a six-month contract starting from August 1st, 2023, with the possibility of renewal. The deal also stipulates a monthly salary of $75,000 for Arnold.
Despite these developments, Waleed Rukraki's name has been temporarily withdrawn from consideration by the Iraqi FA for now.
